Group Looks to Restore Spirit House in Georgetown
Seeks Membership for its Effort

Georgetown, NY---Members of the Spirit House Society (http://www.spirithousesociety.org/) are looking to raise money to purchase Spirit House in Georgetown, NY and turn it into a spiritual healing and retreat center. People that are interested in being part of the effort, or donating to it, should contact Madis Senner (315-463-5369, madiss@verizon.net.)

Spirit House is a nationally registered historic site that has been described as looking like a wedding cake for its ornate design. Its outside scalloped walls give it a wavy appearance and its three tiered cornice with downward pointing keys look like icicles.

Spirit House was built in 1868 by Timothy Brown to serve as a gathering place for Spiritualists. Brown testified that he was guided by Spirits in its construction. Every aspect of the home was designed to facilitate communication with Spirits, from the closets built to be the exclusive domain of Spirits, to the windowless room where Spirits were called. Unfortunately, some time before Brown’s death in 1885 townspeople closed down Spirit House when they discovered what they thought was a medium’s cheat sheet listing information from the town’s graves.

Spirit House has not been lived in or maintained for over two decades. Because of rain damage the house had to be gutted. The Spirit House Society hopes to at a minimum prevent further decay and hopefully help restore it.

Spirit House was put up for sale in 2009.
