Article in the Chenango Evening Sun

GEORGETOWN – Located just within the town limits of Georgetown in Madison County, the historical Spirit House has sat vacant for over two decades. Spiritual enthusiast and founder of the Spirit House Society Madis Senner is hoping to change that.

Built circa 1868 by Georgetown resident Timothy Brown as a spiritual temple, the structure was originally constructed as a gathering place for the spiritualist movement between 1864 and 1885. At a time when New York hosted more spiritual converts than any other state, Georgetown, and the Spirit House, stood at the epicenter of the movement.
Registered as a national historic site in 2005, the structure will require tens of thousands of dollars in renovations, due to rain damage and neglect, said Senner. All of the interior walls have been removed, as well as the finished flooring and furnace. The recently formed Spirit House Society is hoping to, at a minimum, prevent further decay to the structure and, if possible, help to restore it, he added.

Group Looks to Restore Spirit House
Seeks Membership to aid Renovation Efforts for Georgetown Landmark
(Georgetown, NY – Feb. 2011) Members of the Spirit House Society (spirithousesociety.org) are looking to raise fund to purchase Spirit House in Georgetown and turn it into a spiritual healing and retreat center.

People interested in being part of the effort or donating to it should contact Madis Senner at 315-463-5369 or madiss@verizon.net.

Spirit House is a nationally registered historic site that has been described as looking like a wedding cake for its ornate design. Its outside scalloped walls give it a wavy appearance and its three-tiered cornice with downward pointing keys look like icicles.

Spirit House was built in 1868 by Timothy Brown to serve as a gathering place for Spiritualists. Brown testified that he was guided by Spirits in its construction. Every aspect of the home was designed to facilitate communication with spirits, from the closets built to be the exclusive domain of Spirits, to the windowless room where Spirits were called.

Unfortunately, some time before Brown’s death in 1885, townspeople closed down Spirit House when they discovered what they thought was a medium’s cheat sheet listing information from the town’s graves.

Spirit House has not been lived in or maintained for more than two decades. Because of rain damage, the house had to be gutted. The Spirit House Society hopes to – at a minimum – prevent further decay and hopefully help restore it.

Spirit House was put up for sale in 2009. For more information, visit spirithousesociety.org, spirithousesocietypictures.blogspot.com/ or spirithousesociety.blogspot.com/.

Board Meeting

Friends,

Lorraine and I attended the Georgetown Town Board meeting. We talked of our intentions and said that we encouraged input from the town. We gave out our contact information which will be posted in the town bulletin. Members were glad to know that something was being done with Spirit House and a few complimented saying that our project was admirable. There were a few questions of financing and how much that we would have to raise.

Sarah Davies Hasegawa showed up and I finally got a chance to meet her.

Posters and Media

Friends,

I spent the day putting up posters in southern Madison County--Morrisville, Hamilton, Earlville and northern county Chenango County--Sherburne, Norwich.

In the afternoon I was interviewed by Brian Golden of the Chenango Evening Sun at Spirit House. He said that we should be featured either Wednesday, Friday of this week. Afterwards I spent several hours meditating in the woods. The snow was thick and I need my snow shoes.

Brian pointed out an excerpt on the plaque in front of the house: "From 1870 to 1880 there were more Spiritualist conversions in New York than any other state and Spirit House was its center."

I may have read it back when I first discovered Spirit House, but don't remember. It certainly speaks to the power of place.
